Mini Goldendoodle Generations (F1, F1B, F2, F2B, F2BB, F3): What Do They Mean?
Miniature Goldendoodles are the cutest designer breeds in existence today! Not only are they loving, gentle, and free-spirited, but they also have one key trait that makes them so wanted by families: a fluffy, low-shedding coat.
Here’s a refresher if you don’t already know about these gorgeous dogs.
Mini Goldendoodles are a hybrid mix of the Golden Retriever and Miniature Poodle dog breeds. Most Mini Doodle puppies have the friendly, laidback persona of the sunny Golden Retriever parent and the high intelligence of the obedient Mini Poodle.
They’re the perfect dogs for families. And many dog owners are catching on. Mini Goldendoodles are rising in popularity among mixed breeds. Rover reports that “the Goldendoodle jumped up in ranking from number nine in 2020 to the top five in 2021, with “Doodle” ownership doubling in the U.S. since 2016.”
Now, if you’re considering bringing a Mini Goldendoodle into your life, you’ve likely noticed random letters and numbers on some breeds like F1 or F2 Mini Goldendoodle. These aren’t glitches—Mini Goldendoodles come in numerous generational breeds.
In this blog, we’ll explain the differences between each of these breeds so that you can choose the right fluffy, feisty Mini Goldendoodle that’s right for you!
Why do Mini Goldendoodle generations matter?
It’s super important to learn about the ancestry of your Doodle puppy. Knowing about your Mini Doodle’s genetic background provides you with various insights about the type of puppy they are.
For example, just knowing that your puppy is an F2B Mini Goldendoodle lets you know about their physical characteristics, their personality traits, and even the health issues they may have in the future.
Some Mini Goldendoodle generations are more hypoallergenic than others. By learning the differences between each generational breed, you’ll be able to pick the perfect Mini Goldendoodle puppy for you and your family!
Why are there so many generational breeds?
It’s hard to predict the physical and personality traits of a Mini Goldendoodle due to its heritage. Many F1 (first-generation) Mini Goldendoodles are 50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever but this can vary on genetics. Some first-generation Doodles inherit more traits from one parent breed than the other.
All generational breeds have a mix of the shedding gene from their Golden Retriever parent and the non-shedding gene from their Poodle parent. The more a Mini Doodle inherits from its Poodle parent, the less likely it’ll shed fur.
To create a completely hypoallergenic breed, Mini Goldendoodle breeders began creating different multi-generational breeds that would inherit the non-shedding gene from the Poodle. That’s why there are so many beautiful generational breeds available for your choosing.
If having a hypoallergenic dog is a top priority for you, we highly recommend going for any one of our available multi-generational Mini Goldendoodle breeds.
How do you break down the generational labels?
The labels for each generation of the Mini Goldendoodle breed have a letter, a number, and an extra letter (depending on the generation).
Each of these details provides a brief description of your Doodle that can help you make a good final decision. It may be confusing at first, but I promise, it gets easy the more you get familiar with the terms.
- What does the letter “F” mean?
Every label for a Mini Goldendoodle generation starts with the letter “F”. This letter stands for the term “filial hybrid”. This lets you know that your Doodle comes from two purebred dogs. In this case, your puppy comes from one Poodle and one Golden Retriever parent. Every Mini Goldendoodle is considered a crossbreed or a hybrid breed.
- What does the number mean?
The number tells you what generation your Mini Goldendoodle is. For example, if your puppy is an F1 Mini Goldendoodle, then they’re a first-generation offspring of purebred Poodle and Golden Retriever parents. An F2 Mini Goldendoodle means they’re second-generation and so on.
- What does the letter “B” mean?
The letter “B” is usually at the end of a generation’s label. It stands for “backcross”, which means that a Mini Goldendoodle was bred back to a purebred dog. Most Mini Goldendoodles are bred back with a Poodle to maintain or improve the non-shedding gene.
Some breeders may choose to breed back to a purebred Golden Retriever, but this isn’t a common practice. Some Mini Goldendoodle generations are labeled with two B or “BB”. This lets you know that it was backcrossed twice with a Poodle breed.
What types of Mini Goldendoodles are available?
Mini Goldendoodles come in a variety of generational types. If you see your Mini Doodle labeled with the letters and numbers I previously mentioned, don’t freak out!
Remember that each part of your puppy’s label tells you about their physical traits and how many of those traits they inherit from their parents.
All Mini Goldendoodles have the Miniature Poodle somewhere in their genetic line. As such, any generational type you end up bringing home will be an intelligent, small, hypoallergenic dog!
Let’s take a look at a breakdown of all types of Mini Doodles.
- F1 Mini Goldendoodle
An F1 Mini Goldendoodle is the first-generation mix of the Golden Retriever and Mini Poodle breeds. This makes the F1 Mini Doodle 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Miniature Poodle.
They are hypoallergenic, although this varies depending on their breeding. In most cases, an F1 Mini Goldendoodle will inherit an equal amount of physical and emotional traits from each parent breed.
This generational type benefits the most from their heritage. Known as “hybrid vigor”, the F1 Mini Goldendoodle will be healthier than its purebred parents.
As your puppy grows older, you won’t need to worry about potential risks of health issues that Golden Retrievers and Mini Poodles suffer from through aging.
Overall, an F1 Mini Goldendoodle is a sweet, easygoing puppy with curly or wavy fur and a hypoallergenic coat.
F1 Mini Goldendoodle Facts:
- Shedding factor: Most are non-shedding but some can shed just as heavy as a Golden Retriever.
- Allergy: Perfect for families with mild allergies but should be avoided for those with severe allergies.
- Coat: Soft coat that can grow 3 to 5 inches. It can be curly or wavy, though there are some F1 Mini Doodles with straight coats.
- Hybrid vigor: Yes
- Grooming needs: Moderate to high maintenance (regular brushing, trimming, combing, bathing, etc.)
- F1B Mini Goldendoodle
An F1B Mini Goldendoodle is a mix of the F1 Mini Goldendoodle and Miniature Poodle. Some breeders may replace the Miniature Poodle parent with a Golden Retriever to intensify the laidback, charismatic nature of the breed.
However, most F1B Mini Goldendoodle puppies are 75% Miniature Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever. This breed is the second most hypoallergenic generational type listed in this blog.
Its coat rarely sheds fur, making this breed perfect for those with moderate allergies. This Mini Doodle type still retains its hybrid vigor but since it’s technically “second-generation”, it has a higher chance of inheriting health issues from its Miniature Poodle or Golden Retriever parentage.
An F1B Mini Doodle is friendly, trainable, docile with strangers, and hypoallergenic. Like its F1 Doodle cousins, it has a high-maintenance coat that requires your constant attention.
F1B Mini Goldendoodle Facts:
- Shedding factor: Most do not shed fur or are low-shedding.
- Allergy: Low chance of causing potential allergies, although some shed a little fur occasionally.
- Coat: Varies depending on parentage. If it has more Poodle genes, then its coat can be curly or wavy. Its coat length can grow over 3 to 5 inches.
- Hybrid vigor: Yes, but it’s not a lot.
- Grooming needs: Moderate to high maintenance.
- F2 Mini Goldendoodle
An F2 Mini Goldendoodle is a cross between two F1 Mini Goldendoodle parents. This generational breed is 50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever.
Because they inherit traits from each parent breed, F2 Mini Goldendoodles can be friendly and laidback like Golden Retrievers and playful like Poodles.
F2 Mini Goldendoodles are also hypoallergenic, although the level of shedding varies on their genes. These puppies may have curly, wooly coats that give them that cute teddy bear appearance that many dog owners adore.
F2 Mini Doodles have high-maintenance grooming needs. Regular brushing and trimmings are a must. Their coat can also come in various beautiful colors such as white, cream, merle, red, silver, brindle, or chocolate.
This generation is extremely dependable and sweet. If you’re searching for a dog with a hypoallergenic coat but looks like a Golden Retriever, F2 Mini Goldendoodles are a great start!
F2 Mini Goldendoodle Facts:
- Shedding factor: Low to non-shedding.
- Allergy: Its coat is very hypoallergenic so there’s a low chance of allergies.
- Coat: Varies but this generation tends to be curly or wavy fur. Its coat length grows over 3 inches.
- Hybrid vigor: Yes, but as much as F1 Mini Goldendoodles.
- Grooming needs: Moderate to high maintenance grooming needed.
- F2B Mini Goldendoodle
When you cross an F2 Mini Goldendoodle with Miniature Poodle, you get the lovable F2B Mini Goldendoodle. This generational type is 62.5% Miniature Poodle and 37.5% Golden Retriever.
Due to its high amount of Poodle genes, the F2B Mini Goldendoodle may have a wavy or curly coat that won’t shed a lot. It is important to know about the genetic history of your puppy to learn about potential health issues.
Like with F1B Mini Goldendoodle, this generation may inherit more traits from their Poodle parents, including their potential health issues.
The upside of this generational type is that they’re easy to train and bond with. F2B Mini Goldendoodles may also have a playful, eager-to-please nature compared to the other generations.
F2B Mini Goldendoodle Facts:
- Shedding factor: Mostly low to non-shedding.
- Allergy: Not likely to cause allergies for those with mild or moderate allergies.
- Coat: Varies but it is usually curly or wavy.
- Hybrid vigor: Some, but it’s low.
- Grooming needs: Moderate to high maintenance grooming is needed.
- F2BB Mini Goldendoodle
An F2BB Mini Goldendoodle is a cross mix of an F2B Mini Goldendoodle and Minature Poodle. This makes the breed 81.25% Mini Poodle and 18.75% Golden Retriever.
Many breeders call the F2BB Mini Goldendoodles “multigenerational” or “multigenerational Goldendoodles” since they are the fourth-generation offspring of purebred dogs.
Due to its high percentage of Mini Poodle genes, this Doodle is the most hypoallergenic breed on this list. It’s also more likely to have curly or wavy fur over a straight coat. Of course, this also means they’ll need to be brushed and trimmed more often.
F2BB Mini Goldendoodles are highly intelligent, lively, and easy to train.
F2BB Mini Goldendoodle Facts:
- Shedding factor: Little to no shedding.
- Allergy: They have a very low chance of causing allergic reactions, but there are some F2BB Doodle puppies who may shed some hair every month.
- Coat: Varies but it’s mostly curly or wavy.
- Hybrid vigor: Not very much.
- Grooming needs: Moderate to high requirements.
- F3 Mini Goldendoodle
F3 Mini Goldendoodles are a cross between two F2 Mini Goldendoodles. This makes this generational cross 50% Mini Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever.
I highly recommended asking what cross mix an F3 Doodle puppy has before moving forward. Some breeders use different breed mixes to create the F3 Mini Goldendoodle.
That’s why the F3 puppy is sometimes referred to as a “multigenerational Mini Goldendoodle.” At ClassyDoodles, however, our F3 Mini Goldendoodles are the original F2 Mini Doodles mix.
The F3 Mini Goldendoodle’s physical appearance and traits vary depending on which parent breed they take on the most.
For example, many F3 Mini Goldendoodles have a curly coat while others have a straight coat. They may or may not shed any fur.
F3 Mini Doodles are smart, loyal, playful, and trainable. Their Mini Poodle and Golden Retriever heritage let them make friends easily so you’ll always have a happy, fluffy puppy with you no matter what!
F3 Mini Goldendoodle Facts:
- Shedding factor: Varies depending on their heritage but tends to be low-shedding.
- Allergy: Depends on genetic makeup.
- Coat: Can vary between straight, wavy, or curly. Most multigenerational Mini Doodles have curly or wavy fur.
- Hybrid vigor: No.
- Grooming needs: Moderate to high.
